George Soros is an 85-year-old hedge fund manager, philanthropist and political activist who emigrated from Hungary after World War II, and survived to become a multi-billionaire. Now, in his mid-80s, he is still politically aware and has recently re-entered the political scene. According to a story in Politico, Soros gave a large donation ($25 million) to backers of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign, the first donation of that kind from him since he gave a donation in 2004 to fight the reelection of George W. Bush. There’s no doubt that Soros is a dedicated man who believes in a good political fight. According to Politico, Soros was quoted as saying that Donald Trump is “doing the work of ISIS.” Now with Trump actually in the white house, odds are that Soros will continue his fight for democratic values. The Clinton Campaign
George Soros has a long history with Hillary Clinton, and he fully expected her to become president. He had planned to actually attend the Democratic convention last summer, but ultimately was unable to attend. The upset victory of Trump has motivated many people politically, however, and it seems clear that Soros is one of them. With his background as an immigrant who found incredible success in the US, there’s no doubt his feeling about the tenor of the campaign run deep.
The fact of Soros giving a large donation to Clinton’s campaign is significant, as he has often been a catalyst for other large donors. With his history as a brilliant financier and entrepreneur, there’s no question that Soros is someone other leaders like to watch.
Will Soros stay in the political game for the long term? At age 85, it’s hard to say, but there’s no doubt George Soros is a man who should never be underestimated. Read more at The New York Times about George.
